Office 2007 - An Overview of Contextual Ribbons

For those of you exposed to Office 2007, you already know that the traditional menu system has been replaced by Ribbons. There are the Ribbons that are always displayed, but then, there are a lot of extra Ribbons that only display when you have specific objects selected. These are called Contextual Ribbons. To see these ribbons you must first create or insert certain objects. For example, to see tools for formatting a picture, you must first select the picture. Then, notice how an extra Ribbon called Picture Tools appear. You must select the object first, otherwise, you will not see these extra Ribbons. Other examples where Contextual Ribbons appear: Tables Charts SmartArt Headers and Footers etc. Contextual Ribbons are essentially very similar to the various floating toolbars that would appear when certain objects were selected in earlier versions of Office.

Selecting cells in Excel with just your keyboard

This one is for those of you on an airplane, working in Excel on a laptop! You all know that you can use your arrow keys to move around the cells of a worksheet. Hold down Shift and while holding it, use the arrow keys and instead of navigating, it will select cells. Its a bit slow, but very precise.

A Cisco Success Story
