Continuing to look at our topic, The Top Ten Things An Employer Wants, let’s explore 2 things that are more important to an employer than you might think they are:  

 

Honesty

Can you be trusted? Do you utilize integrity? Performing your job well is not the only consideration for an employer. Your character counts and it’s more important than you may think. Employers need to know that you will communicate and conduct business in a reliable and trustworthy manner. This includes appropriately utilizing resources such as time, supplies, equipment, etc.  These are just a few reasons why employers are increasingly performing social media browsing of prospective candidates and current employees, in an effort to gain insight into who they really are (i.e., activities during work hours, personality outside of the office, etc.). 

 

Active Learner/Flexibility

Despite your qualifications and experience, you must be “teachable” and open to learning new information, concepts and methods. Otherwise, you become a management “nightmare” and appear closed-minded and not a forward/progressive thinker. Technology and information in our world continues to progress and you must be willing to adapt to rapid growth and movement.  Why not proactively pursue opportunities to stay abreast of changes in your field or industry and acquire new skills that will continue to make you valuable to employers? This within itself shows an employer you are adaptable, progressive, an active learner and a problem-solver: skills needed by an employer!
